A skinned knee might hurt for a moment and be an annoyance for a day or two, a runny nose or a sick stomach might get our attention a bit more with the constant pain factor, but we know those will end. But a discouraged, broken soul is not so easy to repair and often can lead to despair, that place of constant hurt and hopelessness.
It has been said that “A man’s greatness is measured not by his talent or his wealth, but by what it takes to discourage him.” (Jerry Falwell).
These words have stuck with me.
Discouragement is a powerful weapon of the enemy that can affect our outlook and how we live.
But we DON’T HAVE TO GIVE IN TO DISCOURAGEMENT. We have a choice as to whether or not we will cave to discouragement, even if we feel we cannot overcome it.
Discouragement can throw our mindset into confusion where we lose our focus and let our feelings dictate our lives. But when we walk in truth, our discouragement disappears. Here are some truth bombs that have helped me as I have battled discouragement from different sources:
✤ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 no matter how bad things seem, God is a Redeemer and He Himself will restore us. 1 Peter 5:10, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”
✤ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 we are not beyond His help. Even when we are weak, our God sees us and He is our strength. Philippians 4:13, “I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me”
✤ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 even when we are sick, we are not beyond His reach. Psalm 41:3, “The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.”
✤ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 no matter how traumatic or beyond hope things seem, there is always hope in Christ, our living hope. We access this hope by letting go of our hope being in anything but Christ and trusting that His hope is enough. Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
✤ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 our great, kind God WILL use it all for OUR good and His glory. Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
✤ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 when others are against me, my God is for me. He can help me to stand when I feel rejected and despised because He endured such opposition from men. Romans 8:31 “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
The best news of it all is that when we are discouraged, broken, sick, crushed . . . NOTHING can separate us from God’s love. Romans 8:38-39 “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The accusations of discouragement fall flat when we live in God’s truth. More from Romans (I can’t help myself, so good): “Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.”
We can turn our discouragement into an opportunity to rise in faith. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, and ask God to help you believe it and walk in truth instead of in discouragement.
