Shame RX: We need to look around to see where we are heading.
John 3:18 (ESV)
“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
What are you committed to? Really committed to? The answer might surprise us. We often see the things we willfully choose to be committed to but don’t recognize those things we have committed to, perhaps subconsciously.
Sometimes we work feverishly to accomplish things in this life but fail to look up to see the whole picture. Our ladder might be leaning against the wrong wall.
We can be committed to our schedules, our lifestyle and to how we function in an environment of shame. We come by it naturally. It might be all we ever knew. But that does not mean we have to stay there.
In the cycle of shame, the last stage is commitment. That place where we just can’t seem to overcome shame, so we give up and remain in it. When we don’t know how to process shame, we are committed to staying in shame. A pretty miserable state of existence, if you ask me.
But God. He promises that those who believe in Him are not condemned. Rather than giving in to shame, we can take God at His word.
We need to look around to see where we are heading before we discover that we are headed nowhere fast.
Being aware of shame and how it works helps us to stop the madness of staying on a cycle of dysfunctional behavior. And maybe our ladder can lean on the LORD rather than our own strength. Shame off you, friends. Let’s be committed to Christ and His righteousness and let go of the shame the world tries to place on us. Now that’s a commitment that never lets us down! Amen?
