Shame RX: Conviction is a gift and need not condemn us.
If you’ve ever sat in a courtroom for traffic or other civil or criminal hearings, you know that pervasive lump in your throat well. The tension is palpable and fear of conviction fills the air.
Even when we are not guilty, we just don’t want there to be conviction for something we did not do. And if we are guilty, (can you say lead foot?) well, we are hoping for grace.
Conviction is an admission of guilt, whether by us or against us. And shame abounds when we are the named party. Except for those who are in Christ. Conviction is a gift when we see our shortcomings because of grace. God’s grace trumps our guilt. And when we are falsely accused, we know that God is our Defender. He was falsely accused, too.
In the battle between condemnation and conviction, we don’t have to fear conviction. It might just be the grace of God setting us free from shame.
