Wisdom is a Treasure

Wisdom is a Treasure.

But not everyone seeks after it. Wisdom is a treasure but not everyone finds it. Wisdom is a treasure but not everyone recognizes this truth.

Everyone was not born wise.

But we can acquire wisdom and common sense if we ask. Solomon shows us how to resist worldliness and become wise. Faith is not a passive activity. And wisdom is something we have to seek.

Listen up, y’all! This is what Solomon is pleading with us to do.

Solomon told us to learn to be wise (Proverbs 2:2). Now, he tells us to keep wisdom in our hearts.

Solomon told us to accept wisdom (Proverbs 2:1). Now he tells us that Wisdom is like our sister. Keep it close to you.

Being a believer means we don’t just think about God – we live according to His word. How do we keep ourselves from becoming worldly?

Apply God’s word to our lives.

Faith is not a passive activity.

Reading from Proverbs 7:1-2

“My son, obey my words, and treasure my commands. 2 Keep my commands and live, and guard my instructions as you would the pupil of your eye.3 Tie them to your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your relative. 5 She will keep you from a forbidden woman, a wayward woman with her flattering talk.

Look at the words Solomon uses

Obey – submit to his word.

Don’t just hear the word – do it! We can’t do that if we are not in His word.

Treasure His commands

Do we prize His word above everything else?

Keep my commands

Keeping God’s commands is not just about a to do list, but about having His word in our hearts and applying His commands to our lives.

Guard my instructions

How do we guard His instructions? By having boundaries in our lives that help us to follow His word. And this guarding is as the pupil of our eye – we are going to be careful and observant about what threatens our faith.

  • This world is so hard.
  • There are so many temptations and satan operates by deception.
  • If he can get us to believe his lies, we take our eyes off of the prize.
  • In Proverbs 7 Solomon warns against the adulterous woman.
  • In our culture we see seductive poses and a belief system that says the life well lived is giving into the flesh.
  • But those who are in Christ know that following the flesh leads to death.
  • This book (the Bible) is our very life!

In Proverbs 8 there is a personification of wisdom.

All are not wise, but all can be.

All of us are not born with critical thinking skills or born wise. But that does not stop us from getting wisdom.

I told my children that they needed to seek wisdom. They had to ask God for it.

Proverbs 8:5-10 wisdom invites us and tells us how we get wisdom

“Learn to be shrewd, you who are inexperienced; develop common sense, you who are foolish. 6 Listen, for I speak of noble things, and what my lips say is right. 7 For my mouth tells the truth, and wickedness is detestable to my lips. 8 All the words from my mouth are righteous; none of them are deceptive or perverse. 9 All of them are clear to the perceptive, and right to those who discover knowledge. 10 Accept my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.”

Proverbs 8:13, “To fear the Lord is to hate evil. I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech.”

Proverbs 8:32 holds a promise: “And now, sons, listen to me; those who keep my ways are happy.”

  • Happiness does not come from living a sinful lifestyle or from the world.
  • It comes when we seek God and His word. We were made for God not this world.

Scripture of the Day: Proverbs 8:33-36

33 Listen to my instruction and be wise. Don’t ignore it. 34 Joyful are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home! 35 For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. 36 But those who miss me injure themselves. All who hate me love death.”

Everyone was not born wise. But we can acquire wisdom and common sense if we ask. Solomon shows us how to resist worldliness and become wise. Faith is not a passive activity. And wisdom is something we have to seek.
