It rarely happens all at once. A hard heart doesn’t form overnight.
It begins subtly…with agitation.
Something doesn’t feel fair. Someone disappoints you. Life doesn’t unfold the way you hoped.
And at first, it just feels like frustration.
But if we sit in it…rehearse it…return to it again and again…Agitation begins to take root.
And over time, what started as frustration can quietly become:
Hardness.
The Lie Shame Wants You to Believe
When you notice your heart changing—becoming more guarded, more reactive, less tender—shame often steps in quickly:
“What is wrong with you?”
“You shouldn’t feel this way.”
“A strong Christian wouldn’t struggle like this.”
So instead of bringing it to God…We hide it, and we push through.
We pretend we’re fine while our hearts slowly close.
Shame Rx:
A hardening heart is not a failure—it’s an invitation.
What’s Actually Happening
Psalm 37 doesn’t say, “If you feel agitated, you’ve failed.”
It says: “Do not fret…”
Why?
Because God knows where agitation leads if it’s left unchecked. Not condemnation. But caution.
Agitation is not the problem. Unaddressed agitation is.
The Path Back to a Soft Heart
When you feel your heart tightening, you don’t need to shame yourself.
You need to return. Return to trust. Return to surrender. And return to God.
Instead of replaying what feels wrong, trying to control the outcome, or closing yourself off, you can gently bring your heart back to Him:
“Lord, this is stirring something in me. Help me not let it settle.”
Living Free from This Lie
A soft heart is not maintained by perfection. It is maintained by attention.
By noticing when agitation rises…and refusing to let it stay.
By choosing trust over comparison, surrender over control, and stillness over spiraling.
Your heart stays soft not because life is easy—but because you keep returning it to God.
The Gentle Truth
Friend, God is not disappointed when you feel agitated.
He is inviting you to bring it to Him before it becomes something more.
Because He knows:
A soft heart is where peace lives.
A soft heart is where love flows.
And a soft heart is where He is most clearly seen.
Reflection
What has been quietly agitating my heart lately?
Have I been rehearsing it or releasing it?
What would it look like to bring this honestly to God today?
Prayer
Lord, You see the places where my heart has become unsettled and guarded. Forgive me for holding onto what I should have brought to You. Help me release what is agitating me and trust You instead. Keep my heart soft, attentive, and surrendered so that I can walk in Your peace. Amen.
