Don't you wish you had a dog's life? Well, probably not. But it seems like they don't have burdens, right?

Don’t you wish you had a dog’s life? Well, probably not. But it seems like they don’t have burdens, right?

Cast your burdens

How do you cast your burdens on the LORD? How do we cast what we cannot see to One we cannot see? Psalm 55:22 and 1 Peter 5:7 both invite us to cast our burdens on God. “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” Burdens are struggles that are ongoing. They are hard and difficult for us to deal with. A few things we learn about burdens :

  • Our burdens are often not visible.
  • Sometimes it is hard to give them to God because we can’t see Him.
  • And our burdens are persistent. It is not a once and done proposition to cast our burdens onto God.

The Burdens Are From Him

Can we accept the burdens that God allows into our life? They are a test. The burdens He allows can be given back to Him if we will cast our cares on Him and ask God to help us bear them. Notice that the verse says that as we cast our burdens on God, he will sustain us. He gives us strength and power to overcome. He does not remove us from the fire—he is with us in the fire.

So how do we cast our cares?

Psalm 55:16, “But I call to God, and the LORD will save me.”

There is a relationship the Psalmist has with God. He can ask God to help. Do you have that relationship?

Psalm 55:17, “Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice.”

Notice this burden is stubborn. It keeps the Psalmist in a state of pursuing God for help. This burden again is not just a once and done proposition. Don’t be discouraged if we have to keep bringing the burden to God. As we continue to come to God, we will see over time that our burden has become lighter.

The Psalmist includes Psalm 55:23 with the words, “But I will trust you.”

As we continue to go to God come into His presence, suddenly our focus shifts to Him, and our burdens become lighter. Burdens are stubborn but it is in the practice of coming to God again and again that suddenly we don’t even realize that we are not in the fire anymore. We are just in His presence.
