Shame RX: Expectations in the right place never bring us shame.
Philippians 1:20 (NIV)
“As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.”
You wanted things to turn out a certain way. They didn’t. And you feel shame from that expectation. Why? Expectations are not reality in the first place. Just a hope.
The shame we feel when our hopes or expectations are not realized is based on our inability to control the outcome. And what other wagging tongues might say about it, right?
But perhaps our expectations for this world should look a little different. We are in the world and not of it. We are just passing through with the greatest message in the world.
The Apostle Paul whittled down his expectation to One Thing—that Christ would be honored in his body. That’s it. I can hear some of you saying, wow, so don’t hope for anything in this world? Well, not really. When our focus is on Christ and His glory, He blesses us in ways we did not expect.
Resisting the need to take glory when expectations come to fruition and accepting God’s will for our lives humbly when they don’t, we rise above shame stemming from expectations and choose gratitude in all things for His Name’s sake.
