Why We’re Not Experiencing Peace

The world feels loud right now.

Everywhere we turn there is noise—opinions, conflict, uncertainty, fear. It doesn’t take long before that external chaos starts to become internal chaos.

And if we’re honest, it’s not just “out there.”

It shows up in anxious thoughts we can’t quiet, grief we don’t know how to carry, heaviness we can’t explain, and a low-grade unrest that won’t lift.

This past week, after speaking at a conference on Finding Peace in a Chaotic World and leading worship this weekend, I kept coming back to one simple, sobering thought:

It’s not that peace is unavailable.

It’s that we struggle to believe God will meet us in the middle of what we’re feeling.

The Real Barrier to Peace

When we think about a lack of peace, we often point to circumstances.

But Scripture points somewhere deeper.

Unbelief.

Not always loud, defiant unbelief.
But quiet, subtle unbelief that sounds like:

“God won’t really help me in this.”
“This is just how I am.”
“I have to manage this on my own.”
“Peace might be for others—but not here.”

And so instead of turning toward God in our anxious moments, we turn inward.

We try to manage what only God can minister to.

Making Peace with God

In my talk Making Peace with God, we looked at this truth:

Peace begins where surrender replaces self-reliance.

We cannot experience the peace of God if we are still resisting God’s rule.

Peace is not something we layer onto our lives.

It flows from being rightly aligned with Him.

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 5:1

Peace with God is the foundation.

And from that place, peace in our hearts begins to grow.

Where Peace Is Actually Found

Peace is not found in:

  • perfect circumstances
  • resolved problems
  • quiet environments

Peace is found in a Person.

Jesus did not say, “I will remove all chaos.”

He said:

“My peace I give to you…” — John 14:27

And yet, many of us live as though that peace is distant.

But the truth is:

Peace is not absent—our belief often is.

Friend, if you are struggling to believe God can give you peace that surpasses understanding, I want you to know I am praying specifically for you that God will lift your eyes off the problems so you can surrender them to Him. He really can do it. I am rooting you on!

Scripture Reflection

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on You, because they trust in You.” — Isaiah 26:3

Peace is not the result of perfect control—it is the result of steady trust. As we fix our minds on God and bring our hearts honestly before Him, He meets us not with condemnation, but with sustaining peace.

Closing Prayer

Lord, You see the unrest within us—the thoughts we can’t quiet, the burdens we carry, the places where we struggle to trust You. Forgive us for trying to manage what only You can heal. Help us bring our unbelief to You honestly and anchor our hearts in Your truth. Teach us to trust You in the middle of chaos, and to receive the peace You so freely give. Amen.
