Shame RX: We teach our children to let go of shame by example.
2 Timothy 1:5 (NASB)
“For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.”
Visions of my little girls (and my sons, too, before they knew it was not hip to do so, lol) walking in my heels throughout the house was such a tangible example of how our children initially seek to mimic what we do. As time passes on, though, other influences can crowd in and try to take our rightful place as the one God intended to impress our children with His ways.
But children tend to not be too selective in what they copy initially. Just listen to what a little one says in public and you will know what is said in the home.
But this initial imitation is such an opportunity we dare not forsake. At the core of their foundation can be a treasured faith if we are not irritated by their imitation and recognize it is truly admiration.
The greatest things we mommas and poppas can pass down is how we fight in the Spirit and how we deal with sin and shame.
Some parenting advice resorts to shaming our children, but parents who want to see their children rise above the fray and noise of this world will teach their children how to remove the mantle of shame and replace it with an identity firmly in Christ.
They will show them where their righteousness comes from (Ephesians 6:11-20). They will gird them with truth and help them to see the lies of the enemy, often pouring out of those who even profess Christ. They will teach them how to take captive their thoughts and the venomous words of slanderers and put on the mind of Christ, instead. This is what a woman of God will do for her children.
When we show our children how to really live out our faith and face our shame with God’s word, we give them a great gift that helps them to live their life well for the glory of God.
