There is a reason offense is so difficult to release.
It feels like letting go means letting someone get away with what they did.
Like surrendering our right to justice.
Or like saying the wound didn’t matter.
So we hold on. Because we’re afraid of what releasing it might cost.
And that is where shame quietly begins to speak.
The Lie Shame Wants You to Believe
Shame whispers:
“If you forgive, they win.” “You have to protect yourself.” “Don’t let your guard down.” “If you stop carrying this, you’ll be hurt again.”
So we keep rehearsing the offense, replaying the conversation, reliving the disappointment, and building walls around our hearts.
We tell ourselves we’re protecting our peace. But often, we’re protecting our prison.
Shame says, “Hold on so you won’t lose.”
What Grace Says Instead
Grace gently reminds us that the person most imprisoned by offense is rarely the offender.
It’s us.
Offense asks us to carry a burden Christ never intended us to bear.
Every day we hold onto bitterness, we pay for someone else’s sin with our own peace.
That is far too high a price.
The Freedom Christ Purchased
Jesus never minimized sin.
He carried it.
At the cross, justice and mercy met. Because He carried our debt, we no longer have to carry every offense that comes against us.
Forgiveness doesn’t erase the wound. It releases our hearts from becoming chained to it.
Sometimes the cost of freedom is laying down our right to keep collecting evidence against the people who hurt us.
But what we gain is far greater. Peace. Joy. Freedom. A heart that remains tender instead of hard.
Who Needs Freedom?
Friend, what if the person you need to set free today…is you?
Not because what happened didn’t matter, but because Christ’s freedom matters more.
He never asked you to pretend the wound wasn’t real.
He simply invites you to stop letting it define your future.
Shame Rx: Freedom costs us our right to keep carrying what Jesus already died to release.
Reflection
- Is there an offense I have mistaken for protection?
- What has holding onto this hurt cost me?
- What might freedom look like today?
Prayer
Lord, You know the places where my heart still hurts. You know the offenses I continue to carry and the fear that keeps me holding on. Help me trust You with justice and choose the freedom You purchased for me. Keep my heart soft, my spirit humble, and my eyes fixed on You. Teach me to walk in the freedom of Your grace. Amen.

Great post! Grace is sufficient in all areas of shame.
