Sometimes life feels stacked against us.
The diagnosis comes.
The bill arrives.
The door closes.
The relationship fractures.
The prayer seems unanswered.
And in those moments, shame often sneaks in and tells us a story:
“Of course this happened to you.”
“You never catch a break.”
“Something must be wrong with you.”
“Other people seem blessed, but your life just feels unlucky.”
But Scripture never teaches that God’s people are ruled by luck.
And shame loves the language of luck because it makes pain feel both personal and purposeless at once.
Shame Rx:
Shame loses its grip when we stop calling our circumstances “bad luck” and start bringing them under God’s rule.
Hezekiah faced circumstances that looked impossible. Assyria was stronger. The threats were real. The outcome looked grim. But Hezekiah did not interpret his situation through superstition, fate, or despair. He spread the problem before the Lord.
That is the invitation for us, too.
When circumstances turn against us, shame tells us we are marked, forgotten, or singled out for hardship. But the truth is that hardship is not proof of God’s absence. Nor is it proof that we are deficient.
Sometimes life is painful, not because we are cursed, but because we live in a broken world.
And yet even here, God is not absent. He is sovereign. Present. Attentive.
Shame says, “You are just unlucky.”
Grace says, “Your life is still held by God.”
Shame says, “Nothing ever works out for you.”
Truth says, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”
Shame says, “This must mean something is wrong with you.”
Jesus says, “Bring it to Me.”
Circumstances may feel random.
But God is not random.
And when we stop measuring our lives by luck, we can start anchoring them in the faithfulness of God.
Reflection Questions
- Where have I been tempted to interpret hardship as a sign that I am forgotten or deficient?
- Have I labeled something “bad luck” instead of bringing it honestly before the Lord?
- What would it look like to trust God’s sovereignty even when my circumstances feel unfair?
Prayer
Lord, when life feels stacked against me, guard my heart from shame. Keep me from believing that hardship means You have forgotten me or that I am somehow marked for defeat. Teach me to bring every burden before You and trust that You are still sovereign, still good, and still at work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
