Shame RX:

Laughter is good medicine for those willing to take it.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”  —Proverbs 17:22

Walking through the grocery store with my sweet 2-year old toddler walking beside me and my precious 2-month old baby in the cart, the pressure to get in and out of that store without a major mishap was real. “Please, God. I don’t want to make a scene”, I muttered underneath my breath.

I felt heroic that day, adventurously attempting two errands with my crew. We had survived the first outing of the day where my 2-year-old who had recently acquired the skill of burping LOUDLY stood underneath the counter and let one rip. The postal clerk did not see her, looked up, and stared at me.

Laughter is good medicine for those willing to take it. And I took perhaps a bit too much of that medicine, as the nervous laughter turned into an obnoxious snort and we scurried on out of there to our next stop: the grocery store.

Every mom knows the routine. Skip going through every aisle. Just the outer edges of the store. This is survival. But survival of what? Experiencing shame from man. If only we could make it through the grocery shopping trip without any major tantrum or faux pas. If. Only.

As I walked through the store placing things in my cart, I was keenly aware that it was almost time to nurse. Just then, a man approached me and told me that my milk was leaking.

WHAT?!

I was mortified. Pressing my arms against my chest, I hoped the breast milk had not soaked my outfit. That’s when I noticed my outfit was dry. The man was talking about a gallon of milk in my cart.

Laughter is good medicine for those willing to take it.

It’s hard to put into words what shame does to us. the insane amount of energy that goes into trying to avoid the experience. But sometimes in those moments, we can discover a different perspective and laugh.

Trying to look like the perfect mom is exhausting. Life is messy. There’s no shame in that.
